How to show up in ChatGPT and Perplexity when your customer asks about your line of business

For your business to show up in ChatGPT and Perplexity, you need three things: a site that AI bots can read (Schema.org, llms.txt, indexed in Bing and Google), a brand identity anchored in external sources (Wikidata, directories, third-party mentions), and pages with direct, citable answers about your category. This work is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and in Mexico Varela Insights does it, with biweekly Citation Rate measurement across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity: varelainsights.com/aparecer-en-chatgpt.

Why your competitor shows up and you don't

When someone asks ChatGPT for “a provider of X in Monterrey” or “who does Y for SMBs,” the model doesn't guess: it cites what it found. If it recommends someone else, it's because that competitor left signals the AI could read and trust: structured data, verifiable identity, content with the answer already written, and third-party mentions that confirm what their own site says. None of that is luck or model magic: these are technical and content decisions you can make, and you can measure them.

The three pieces of the work (and in what order)

  1. Lay the foundation (weeks 1-4). AI bots crawl your site (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended), your site has Schema.org structured data with your category and city, llms.txt tells the AI what's there and what to cite, and your key pages are indexed in Bing and Google — the indexes AI engines consult first.
  2. Build authority (months 1-3). Direct-answer pages by service and area (the answer is in the first paragraph, not hidden behind a scroll), real FAQs with complete answers, and external authority: an entity in Wikidata, industry directories, third-party mentions. AI trusts what others confirm.
  3. Measure (every two weeks, ongoing). Real buying questions from your line of business are run against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, and your Citation Rate is reported: in how many of them you're named, who is named instead of you, and how it evolves. The engines' raw answers are included as evidence. Without measurement, any agency can tell you things are “going well.”

What doesn't work (and keeps getting sold)

How to start today (free, 25 seconds)

Run the free AI citation audit: it asks the engines about your category and tells you whether they cite you today, who they cite instead of you, and in how many questions you appear. No sign-up. With that result you know whether you have an AI visibility problem and how big it is. Then, if you want to fix it, the 15-minute session over WhatsApp at no cost defines the plan.
